The Things We Do For Our Kids: Adding Pickleball to the Rotation

If you had told me a few years ago that I’d be regularly stepping onto an undersized court hitting a perforated plastic ball with an oversized ping-pong paddle, I probably would have laughed. If you know my laugh you can probably hear it in your head.
Don’t get me wrong—I haven’t given up tennis. The deep strategy, the footwork, and the satisfying crunch of a clean serve hitting the sweet spot make tennis my true sporting love, and I still play at least once a week. But lately, pickleball has officially entered the rotation, and a family pack of paddles now sits right in the hallway alongside my tennis bag.
Why add a whole new sport to the mix? It’s simple: my daughters.
The Real Goal: Defeating Screen Time
Like every parent in the modern world, I am constantly fighting the endless pull of digital devices. The tablets, the short-form videos, the streaming apps—they have an absolute stranglehold on kids’ attention spans.
So when my daughters showed a spark of interest in pickleball, I didn’t hesitate for a single second. Honestly, our friends that have two boys spurred on the challenge to dedicate time to play, this was the enzyme needed for us to dedicate the time. Any opportunity, any chance, any tiny request from them to step outside, get moving, and spend real time together in the fresh air is something I will support with everything I’ve got. If adding kitchen-line dinks to my week gets them off their screens and laughing outside, I’m all in.
The Beginner’s Wall: What Is Happening With The Scoring?
While the physical barrier to entry for pickleball is amazingly low—you can basically pick up a paddle and start hitting right away—there is one massive hurdle every single beginner stumbles over: the scoring system.
Coming from tennis, the scoring feels like pure chaos. In tennis, it’s 15, 30, 40, game. It’s clean, predictable, and simple.
Pickleball scoring, on the other hand, sounds like an advanced algebra equation the first time you hear it shouted across the net.
Before every serve, the server has to call out three numbers:
-
The serving team’s score
-
The receiving team’s score
-
Which server they are (Server 1 or Server 2)
So, two minutes into our first game, my daughters were staring at me like I was speaking a foreign language when I called out: “4 - 2 - 2!”
Then comes the “Kitchen” rule (you can’t volley while standing in the non-volley zone), the two-bounce rule (the ball has to bounce once on the serve and once on the return before you can hit it out of the air), and the fact that you can only score points when your team is serving.
For the first few outings, 80% of our game wasn’t even playing—it was us standing at the net deciphering who was supposed to be serving, which court they should be standing in, and what server number they actually were.
The Trade-Off Is Worth Every Second
Eventually, the scoring math clicks. The confusing rules start to make sense, the rallies get longer, and the competitive banter starts up.
Watching my kids get genuinely excited about landing a drop shot into the kitchen or stringing together a great rally makes every second worth it. The beauty of pickleball isn’t just that it’s easy to play—it’s that it bridges the gap between generations faster than almost any other sport.
I’ll always be a tennis player at heart, but I’m more than happy to make room for both. I’ll gladly take the bizarre three-digit scoring calls, the plastic ball pops, and the kitchen line chaos if it means spending another sunny afternoon outside with my girls.
